Coffee table book layouts

I’ve been wanting to do a post on layouts quite some time now. Given my Graphic design background, I enjoy this aspect of my work almost as much as shooting. It is amazing how an image can be brought to life when juxtaposed with another image! You can be very creative with layouts when deciding which images should be a full page spread and which ones would fit nicely into a tight grid (such as for the ceremony and reception where the main aim is to tell ‘the story’). What I love about these layouts is that there is no text and one depends entirely on the visual aspect to fill in the details. I offer these books to my clients in square format with a hard, printed cover. By default the book has 60 semi gloss pages and is 30 x 30cm. Below I post a few pics taken

of these books as well as a few layout pages from Lara & Hendré’s coffee table book. Although I don’t see myself as a minimalist, I like to keep the layouts as simple and clean as possible (no overlapping images, words written across photos or over crowded layouts). My margins are always fixed and I have a few templates (which I created myself) from which I choose so that there is a rhythm across the pages. Two of the many reasons I love these books are that they are light to carry and the images really come to life (as opposed to seeing them on a computer screen)! I hope this post will be insightful to someone!

For photographersI often get asked which layout program I use – I use the ‘extreme version’ of Luma Pix. This is such a lovely, user friendly program, I simply adore it! Unfortunately only a Windows version is available, so if you are a Mac user like myself you need to run Windows parallel on your system in order to install Luma pix.
